'Golden At-Bat' Rule ⚾

Overstatement or MLB Altering?

Should we be preparing for another big Manfred rule?

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred recently revealed that the "Golden At-Bat" rule had been discussed during owners’ meetings and on the Varsity Podcast, igniting a wave of speculation and debate amongst baseball fans.

The idea behind the "Golden At-Bat" rule is pretty wild. Essentially, it would let a team pick one at-bat in every game where they could send up their best hitter—no matter where they are in the lineup. Your star slugger could get another shot at the plate if you need a game-winning homer.

Manfred has tried to calm fans letting them know that this is “conversation only.” Ideally, you'd like the commissioner of a sport actually to like that sport, but given his uninspiring 10-year commissioner history, I think fans are ready to throw flames. We’re talking about the man who implemented extra innings, shift bans, pitch clocks, and ghost runners now trying to throw in a magic hitter.

Not sure if his stance is pro-baseball or pro “I don’t care as long as the Astros win,” but regardless it doesn’t seem like a majority vote. Even Manfred seems opposed. Check out this video of him knocking the idea in 2015. 👇

To be clear— we think this is utterly ridiculous. In this article by Bleacher Report, they’ve proposed 3 caveats to the GAB and we’d like to add to it:

  1. Can only be used once in a series

  2. The rule can only be used to solve a game that goes over the 9th inning

  3. If the Golden At Bat is implemented, we have to remove the ghost runner rule

Here’s the deal— baseball is a game, not a show. Unless we want the Savannah Bananas to be the new face of the MLB, Manfred has got to let this “conversation” go.
